Problems with misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps:
People suffering from Dementia have the tendency to misplace things and put them in unusual places,they may take things that look like theirs which makes people think they steal or makes them accused of stealing and always forget things and also find it difficult in retracing steps mostly as the disease progresses.
Decreased sense of judgement:
Some individuals suffering from this disease may experience changes in judgment or decision making. Here is an example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money or pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean.
Social withdrawal:
Some persons living with this disease may experience changes in the ability to hold conversation. As a result, he or she may withdraw from hobbies, social activities and other engagements. They may have some issues keeping up with their favourite activity.
Mood and personality changes :
People living with dementia may experience mood and personality changes. They can become confused,depressed,suspicious,anxious or fearful. they may easily become upset at home with friends or when out of their comfort zone
COMMON FORMS OF DEMENTIA
Alzhemier's disease is the most common form causing about 60-70% of the disease. In this type of dementia certain protein inside and outside brain cells make it hard for brain cells to stay healthy and to communicate with each other.
The brain region called hipocampus is the center for learning and memory in the brain and the brain cells in this region are often the first to be damaged. thus memory loss is the first symptom of Alzhemier's disease.
Other major forms include Vascular dementia,dementia with lewy bodies,frontotemporal dementia.
TREATMENT OF DEMENTIA
No treatment has been currently found or is currently available to cure dementia or to alter is progression. However,much can be offered to support and improve the lives of the people with this disease,provide the necessary support and assistance their families and care givers need . The major aim of care are:
* Early diagnosis in order to promote early and optimal management.
* Optimizing physical health,cognition,activity tolerance and well being.
* Identification and treatment of accompanying physical illnesses.
* Detecting and treating challenging behavioural and psychological symptoms.
* Providing adequate information and long-term support to carers.
In most cases of dementia,there is no cure no drug that slows or stops progression but there are drugs that improve symptoms tempoarily. Non-drug therapy can also help to alleviate some symptoms od dementia.
But the ultimate is love, they need to be shown love and it is best that they are nursed in their homes
PREVENTION OF DEMENTIA
Regular exercise
Avoid smoking
Avoid the constant and harmful use of alcohol
Control weight
Eat healthy diet
Maintain blood pressure,cholesterol, blood sugar levels.
RISK FACTORS
These may not be the actual cause but are suspected to cause the disease.
Age: it affects mostly the elderly
Sex: it affects females mostly
People with depression
People with low social attainment
Inactivity
Genetics
